STRABISMUS TREATMENT<\/span><\/h1>\n

Although eyes are our organs of vision, it has a more complex network, vein and muscle\nstructure when compared to other organs. There are 6 muscles for each eye that enable our\neyes to move in horizontal and vertical axis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Strabismus can be expressed as the condition where two eyes are at different points, not in\nparallel. The reason is that the muscles controlling the eye in the outer part of the eyes are\nmechanically less or more powerful.<\/span><\/p>\n

Strabismus, also known as crossed eyes in common language, is referred to as \"Strabismus\" in Latin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anatomical Classification of Strabismus<\/span><\/h2>\n

Strabismus can be temporary or permanent. Sometimes, strabismus is on one eye,\nsometimes is on both eyes. In order to make a classification, one eye is taken as reference,<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • \u00a0Esotropia is a form of strabismus in which one or both eyes turns inward.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • \u00a0Exotropia is a form of strabismus where the eyes are deviated outward.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • \u00a0Hhypotropia is a condition of misalignment of the eyes (strabismus), whereby the visual axis of one eye is higher than the fellow fixating eye.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • \u00a0In hypertropia, referred to as hypertropia in Latin, one eye is positioned higher than the reference eye.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Causes of Strabismus<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Strabismus does not occur due to a single cause; it can develop from multiple factors. To briefly mention the causes:<\/h3>\n
      \n
    • \u00a0Prenatal problems, problems at birth<\/span><\/li>\n
    • \u00a0Genetic predisposition<\/span><\/li>\n
    • \u00a0Medical conditions in childhood<\/span><\/li>\n
    • \u00a0Eye disorders should be checked out in 2-3 year old and older children who have\nstrabismus. In addition, strabismus may result from fever-related diseases, falling,\nsurgeries or any accident.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • \u00a0Accidents and head trauma may lead paralysis developed in the brain\u2019s optical center.\nThis can affect eye muscles and cause strabismus.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • \u00a0Uncontrolled high blood pressure and high blood sugar levels may damage the brains\u2019s\noptical center.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      \u00a0Symptoms of Strabismus:<\/span><\/h2>\n
        \n
      • \u00a0Disruption of the existing symmetry between the eyes.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • \u00a0Watering eyes in high frequency or at irregular intervals.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • \u00a0Pain in the eye and the brain<\/span><\/li>\n
      • \u00a0In general, the occurrence of double vision of objects or the decrease or disappearance\nof 3D (three-dimensional) vision.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • \u00a0Blurry vision is the most common symptom of strabismus.<\/span><\/li>\n

        Types of Strabismus<\/span><\/h2>\n

        Considering the types of strabismus seen in the society, the most common ones can be\nclassified as congenital strabismus, hidden strabismus condition, strabismus caused by\nrefractive errors in the eye, strabismus caused by paralysis, strabismus in adults and\nspecial strabismus conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Congenital Strabismus<\/span><\/h2>\n

        Congenital Strabismus usually starts within the first months of birth and becomes\nprominent within a year. Regular ophthalmologist controls become important in terms of\ntreatment and early diagnosis. Within the first months after birth, congenital strabismus\ncan be diagnosed with a detailed eye examination performed by an ophthalmologist.\nPeriodic check-up may be requested.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Since low and moderate hypermetropia can be generally observed in babies, we\nrecommend that families to take their babies to an ophthalmologist to make an\nexamination as soon as when they notice strabismus in their children.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Strabismus Caused by Refractive Defects<\/span><\/h2>\n

        It generally starts at the age of 1-2, depending on the refractive error in the eye. It is a\ntype of strabismus common in children with severe hyperopia. In this condition, the\nstrabismus can be eliminated completely or partially. Strabismus may start all of a\nsudden. Falling or high fever may result in strabismus.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Hidden Strabismus<\/span><\/h2>\n

        It is a type of strabismus that can be physically observed externally by closing one of the\neyes. It is a very common type of strabismus in Turkey. When both eyes are open, this\ntype of strabismus can only be distinguished by an ophthalmologist. Patient complaints\nare more intense if the patient also has refractive eye defects. In particular, headache\nwhile reading is the most frequently reported complaint by the patients with strabismus.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Strabismus Caused by Paralysis<\/span><\/h2>\n

        Difficult labour, trauma or high fever experienced in infancy, multiple sclerosis (MS) and\nsimilar diseases affecting the nervous system, intracranial tumors and cysts may be the\ncauses of strabismus. In such cases, when the brain\u2019s optical center is damaged, patients\ngenerally complain about double vision. Strabismus caused by a temporary paralysis in\nyoung ages can be permanent in adolescence and adulthood.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Strabismus in Adults<\/span><\/h2>\n

        Strabismus occurred in adolescence and adulthood is generally observed as exotropia. It\nmay occur due to the excessive or the deficient work of the outer muscles that provide\nthe inner movement of the eye.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Special Types of Strabismus<\/span><\/h2>\n

        Sometimes, functional (functional) disorders in the muscles may be encountered with birth. Amblyopia is an issue to be considered in strabismus due to functional reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
