EYE EXAMINATION IN INFANTS

Eye examination in newborn babies is one of the basic examinations for the solution of congenital eye problems, which is necessary for early diagnosis and treatment.

WHEN SHOULD EYE EXAMINATION BE PERFORMED IN NEWBORN BABIES?

It is recommended that eye examination in newborn babies be done within a few months from birth. Performing an eye examination in the first 6 months is important in terms of early diagnosis and treatment of any eye disorders.

EYE DISEASES THAT MAY OCCUR FROM BIRTH AND AFTER BIRTH

Congenital cataracts

Strabismus

Eyelid deformities

Blocked tear duct

Ocular hypertension

Amblyopia

In case of these diseases, the treatments should be carried out periodically. In addition, if the baby was born prematurely, it is important to provide eye exam within the first two months in terms of keeping probable retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) under control.

Blocked tear duct is one of the most common ailments, especially in infants. It can cause burring and watering in the eye. Generally, it can be relieved by itself in the first year, but eye drops and warm compress may be applied if necessary and with recommendations of the ophthalmologist. However, in some cases, a small operation may be required. The need may derive from the increase in intraocular blood pressure, which can also cause watering in the eye. Ocular hypertension is an urgent situation and an ophthalmologist check is required as soon as possible.
