Lazy Eye Syndrome (Amblyopia)

Although treatment for lazy eye syndrome is possible, it is a disease that can result in permanent vision loss. It is most commonly seen in the patients with advanced hyperopia due to genetic congenital problems . That the patient is not regularly examined until the age of 8 is the biggest factor in favor of this syndrome. It is ideal to be examined once after birth, once at the age of 2, and once at the age of 5.

Congenital cataracts, congenital ptosis (droopy eyelid), and congenital strabismus that are likely to cause lazy eye syndrome can be prevented with an examination of the newborn. If diseases are detected and their treatments are arranged, lazy eye syndrome can be prevented. The harmony between the movements of both eyes and the movements of eyes individually should be investigated with a pediatric eye exam at the age of 2. In particular, signs of strabismus may indicate advanced hyperopia. Its treatment gives very successful results.

In a pediatric exam at the age of 5, as the child adapts to all kinds of eye examinations, refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism) can be detected more comprehensively. Then, its treatment can be regulated. Thus, the child becomes ready for pre-school education. The treatment is crucial since the learning is perceived vastly with our visual sense. After the age of 8, the treatments for amblyopia are very limited. The treatments may not always be successful
