DRY EYE TREATMENT

Dry Eye Treatment

Dry eye syndrome, also known as dry eye, is the name of the disorder caused by inadequate production of tears, insufficient quality of tears, and tears’ inability to form a good quality layer on the eye. Dry eye disease is a condition whose incidence has increased especially with the development of the industrial society. An ophthalmologist's examination is required for the diagnosis and treatment of dry eye disease.

Dry Eye and Tears

Tears are composed of 97.8% water, 0.9% sodium chloride and 0.4% protein. They have same osmotic pressure as body fluids (globulin, albumin, etc.). They provide moisture for eyes. Eyes are washed regularly with tears. In addition, they are crucial to prevent any infection that may occur on eye surface, and prevents the particles adhere to eye.

How Does Dry Eye Develop?

In today's society, both the effect of greenhouse gases, the poor quality of the air we breathe, and the adverse health conditions created by ourselves, our tear gland cannot perform a qualified eye wash. Dry eye syndrome is a disorder that is more common in elderly people and in individuals who work intensively at their desk. It is more common in women after menopause. Dry eye caused by vitamin A deficiency is observed in underdeveloped countries.

In addition, the use of drugs such as antihistamines, beta-blockers and diuretics can cause the development of dry eye.

Symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome:

Dry eye syndrome has obvious symptoms that can be understood by patients.

  •  Development of a stinging sensation and burning sensation
  •  Having a viscous and dense fluid in and around the eye
  •  Redness of the eye
  •  If contact lenses are used, increased sensation of stinging when using lenses
  •  At times, feeling of excessive watering and tiredness

Dry eye is measured with the Schirmer test. The Schirmer test can be performed by an ophthalmologist. An ophthalmologist's control is essential for a complete diagnosis of dry eye.

Treatment of Dry Eye Disease

The most commonly used method for treating dry eye is artificial tear drops. These eye drops are products with the same osmotic pressure as tears and mimic tears in the eye. This way, the intraocular is reached to the desired density and moist environment as in tear drops. The choice of artificial tears should be determined by your ophthalmologist in accordance with your individual characteristics and the condition of your disease. Dosage and frequency are also be determined by your physician. Among alternative methods is the obstruction of the channel which leads to the nose. In addition, the dry eye patient must protect himself from environmental factors such as air conditioning, stove, and smoking.
