CATARACT

CATARACT SURGERY CATARACT TREATMENT

Cataract is the loss of transparency of our eyes’ natural lenses. It can be seen at any age. The most common type appears as age-related cataracts after the age of 55. Since cataract treatment is not possible with drugs, surgical operation (Phacoemulsification) or laser operation (Femtosecond Laser) is required.

Cataract symptoms include blurred and hazy vision. Patients with cataract may feel like they look through a dirty glass window, start to need eyeglasses. They might stop the need for reading glasses by being able to see near. Light sensitivity is another symptom for cataract. In addition, some types of cataract can cause an increase in eye pressure and cause the development of glaucoma.

Today, there are two types of technology-supported methods used in cataract surgery;

 Phacoemulsification

Dry macular degeneration is a common eye disorder among people over 50. It causes blurred or reduced central vision, due to thinning of the macula. The most commonly used method to treat this disorder works on the principle of melting cataract tissue with ultrasonic sound waves. With the Phacoemulsification technique, approximately 2.5 mm corneal incision is made in the eye and no stitches are made. It is a method that requires an experienced surgeon.

 Femtosecond Laser

Since it is a new technological development, it is less common in developed countries in the world. Technological developments and the experience gained by operator doctors show us that Femtosecond Laser will become the priority choice in cataract treatment.

Femtosecond Laser has some differences from the other techniques. In this technique, laser incision is made instead of a blade incision. The surgeon does not need to open the cataract capsule. The capsule is opened smoothly with laser. Cataract tissue is divided into pieces by laser (Fragmentation). In addition, since ultrasound energy is not used, there is no risk of tissue damage. The disadvantage of this technique is that it is not suitable for all types of eye and cannot be used at every cataract level.

An important decision needs to be made before performing cataract operations, the selection of the artificial lens to be installed in place of the lens removed from the eye. More than twenty thousand cataract operations have been performed in the last decade by the highly experience doctors of HealthTourismCenterTurkey. All lenses we use are FDA approved and CE certified.

At HealthTourismCenterTurkey, over 20,000 cataract surgeries have been performed in approximately 10 years. All the lenses we use are FDA-approved and CE certified.

The main goal in cataract surgery is to restore the patient's health. However, it is necessary to determine the ideal type of lens for the patient’s work and social life, daily activities and hobbies. Distance and near vision problems can be eliminated without glasses by applying multifocal (bifocal, trifocal, multifocal) lenses .

Choosing the ideal lens can facilitate daily life. For instance; The lenses that increase the quality of night vision are the lenses that we prefer especially for our patients who intensively drive at night. UV (Ultraviolet) filters are especially recommended for patients who spend most of their days outdoors and are exposed to the sun. Anti-reflective filters are more important for the patients who works under light and with computers

Since these lenses are placed inside the eye, meeting the patient's expectations becomes a priority. This is just as important as removing cataracts.

PHACOEMULSIFICATION AND FEMTOSECOND LASER METHODS IN CATARACT OPERATIONS

Cataract surgeries are undoubtedly the most common surgical procedures applied to patients today. With the advancing technological possibilities, needle-free and seamless methods are commonly used in cataract surgical procedures.

PHACOEMULSIFICATION METHOD

The procedure is based on the principle of breaking up the hardened cataract lens using ultrasound (sound) waves and removing it from the eye with the help of fluid. It is important that this procedure is performed by physicians who have advanced their skills in advanced phacoemulsification techniques. The application does not require sutures, but 2.5 mm surgical incisions are made using a blade.

LASER CATARACT SURGERY

In HealthTourismCenterTurkey, laser cataract surgeries are performed with great emphasis on patient safety and comfort. Femtosecond laser cataract devices are computer-aided systems with OCT (Ocular Coherence Tomography).

Corneal incisions and incision of the lens capsule are made with laser systems. The fragmentation of the lens is achieved by laser cuts. Since patients are not exposed to ultrasound vibrations, the structures of the eye other than cataracts are not adversely affected by the application. Tissue damage is not seen.

WHICH LENS ARE USED IN CATARACT SURGERY?

Whether with Phacoemulsification or Femtosecond Laser applications, the dysfunctional natural lens is removed from the eye and an artificial intraocular lens is placed instead.

Lenses that allow us to see far distance only are called monofocal (single focal) lenses. Bifocal lenses enable us to see distance and near. Trifocal lenses enable us to see far, middle and near distance. Bifocal and trifocal lens applications provide the opportunity to live without glasses.

The type of lens to be used is decided according to the eye structure and lifestyle of the patients.
